NONG KHAI
The Thai-Lao friendship bridge, opened in 1995, has given the formerly
quiet town of Nong Khai a much higher profile. With the Lao capital
of Vientiane just 25 km away, Nong Khai has become an important
market for the exchange of Lao and Thai goods.
One of Nong Khai's most populur attractions is Sala Kaew Ku. The
grounds of this unusual temple are filled with strange statues depicting
scenes from Buddhist and Hindu lore. following the Mekong river
east from Nong Khai you will arive at Phu Thok, a huge outcropping
of rock rising abruptly from the plain at Bung Kan. A winding network
of stair cases and walkways leads to the top, where there is a magnificent
view of the surrounding area. Near the top is a meditation temple
which can be reached only by a small pathway which clings to the
sheer cliff.
